Seven Y6 pupils represented Tirlebrook in the Cheltenham and North Tewkesbury Sports Network's annual Tag Rugby Festival, held at Newlands Park in Cheltenham. It was a huge event with 48 teams from 31 schools taking part. Tirlebrook entered two teams who, by the end of the day, had come home with School Games medals after a thoroughly enjoyable competition.
Miss. Featonby and Mrs. Gosden's squad finished third in their pool in the morning after winning three of their matches and losing two. They convincingly beat Swindon Village B and Dunalley before losing to eventual overall champions Holy Apostles. They then lost a very closely fought match with Prestbury St. Mary's A 4 -3, before going on to win their final match against Gardner's Lane. This sent them through to the Bowl competition in the afternoon where they defeated Prestbury St. Mary's other team in the first round. In a very tight semi-final, Tirlebrook lost 4-3 to St. James B and so went into the 3rd place elimination match. Here they were convincing winners against local rivals Twyning, and the 5-2 victory earned the squad bronze medals in the Bowl section of the competition. Well done.
Mr. Lockley's squad played superbly all morning, but ended up winning just once after four defeats. This was hard on the team as all of the matches were close (v. John Moore L 4-3, v. Rowanfield L 5-4, v. Gotherington L 5-3, v. Warden Hill L 3-2) and it could have been easy for the team to get downhearted. Their team spirit, positive attitude and energy throughout the competition ensured that that was not to be the case. After winning their final game 5-2 against Grangefield, the team won through to the Flute section of the competition. They overcame Gretton in the first round by a scoreline of 6-1 and then beat Swindon Village A 5-4 in a very close semi-final that went to a golden try. In the final, they were overpowered by St. James A, and despite the disappointment, they can be very proud of their performance, and of course their silver School Games medals.
It was a brilliant event and everyone from Tirlebrook can be extremely proud indeed. Well done!
